Microsoft has deprecated or altered some MGDC onboarding flows. You can no longer simply register the app manually in Azure AD and expect MGDC to work as before.
- MGDC apps must be onboarded via the Microsoft 365 Admin Center or through Microsoft Fabric (for newer tenants).
- Manual app registrations in Azure alone will not suffice unless properly linked to the MGDC provisioning service.
Steps to Recreate the Graph Data Connect App (2025 Approach)
A. Use Microsoft 365 Admin Center (Recommended)
Go to Microsoft 365 Admin Center > Setup > Microsoft Graph Data Connect
Follow the guided onboarding process for a new app registration.
This will ensure the app is registered with the necessary schema, permissions, and consent.
B. If You Must Register Manually (Advanced)
Go to Azure AD > App registrations > New Registration
Register a new app (avoid reusing the old one’s name or ID)
Under API permissions, add:
Microsoft Graph > Application > User.Read.All, Group.Read.All, Directory.Read.All
`Office 365 Management APIs` > `ActivityFeed.Read`, if activity data is needed
Microsoft Graph Data Connect permissions (select from Data Connect)
Grant Admin Consent for the entire tenant
- Assign Microsoft Graph Data Connect roles via AAD (in Enterprise applications > Your app > Permissions)
C. Use Microsoft Fabric (If applicable)
If you are using Fabric, the Graph Data Connect experience is now integrated:
Go to Fabric > Manage > Data Pipelines > Connectors > Microsoft 365 (Graph).
- Provision through that interface, which handles backend wiring automatically.
